TL;DRThe net difference between aggressive buying volume and aggressive selling volume at each price level. Positive delta means buyers are more aggressive. Negative delta means sellers are in control.
In futures order flow analysis, delta measures the difference between trades that hit the ask (aggressive buys) and trades that hit the bid (aggressive sells) at each price level.
Positive delta means more buyers were willing to pay the ask. Negative delta means sellers were more aggressive. This reveals who is pushing price.
Cumulative delta tracks the running total over a session. If delta has been net positive all day, cumulative delta is rising, suggesting buyers have been more aggressive overall.
Divergences between price and cumulative delta can be informative. If price makes new highs but cumulative delta is falling, buyers are becoming less aggressive at higher prices. This can be an early reversal warning.
Footprint charts display delta at every price level within each candle. A candle that closed higher with strong positive delta at the highs suggests genuine buying. A candle that closed higher but with negative delta at the highs (absorption) is less bullish.
Delta analysis requires specialized tools like Sierra Chart, Bookmap, or Jigsaw. Most free platforms don't offer footprint charts.
Delta confirming a breakout
ES breaks above 5,210 resistance. The breakout candle shows +1,200 delta.
Strongly positive delta confirms aggressive buyers drove the breakout. Higher-conviction than a breakout with flat or negative delta.
Delta divergence
ES makes a new high at 5,230 but cumulative delta has been declining for 30 minutes.
Price rising with weakening buying. Often a prelude to reversal. Not an immediate short signal, but a reason to be cautious about new longs.
Using delta as a standalone signal
Delta is context, not a signal. Combine with price action, levels, and market structure.
Looking at delta without understanding the order book
Delta shows aggressive orders. It doesn't show passive liquidity that can absorb without showing in delta.
Overcomplicating with too many delta indicators
Start with simple cumulative delta and one footprint chart. Too many indicators create analysis paralysis.
