TL;DRThe primary trading session when volume, liquidity, and institutional participation are highest. For equity index futures, RTH runs 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time.
Regular Trading Hours (RTH) is the primary daily session when the corresponding cash market is open. For equity index futures (ES, NQ, RTY, YM), RTH is 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, matching the New York Stock Exchange hours.
For crude oil (CL), the primary session runs 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM ET. Gold (GC) has primary hours from 8:20 AM to 1:30 PM ET. Agricultural futures have their own schedules. Each product's RTH aligns with when institutional participants are most active.
The vast majority of volume occurs during RTH. For ES, over 70% of daily volume trades between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM ET. This concentration of volume means tighter spreads, deeper order books, and better execution.
Institutional traders (hedge funds, banks, pension funds, prop desks) primarily execute during RTH. Their activity creates the largest and most meaningful price moves. Overnight moves in the Globex session are often retested or reversed during RTH.
Many technical analysis concepts, including opening range, initial balance, value area, and VWAP, are calculated using RTH data only. If you're using these tools, you need to know which hours they reference.
Most retail futures traders focus on RTH for good reason. Better liquidity means less slippage. More participants create clearer price signals. Technical levels are more reliable because more eyes are watching them.
The first and last hours of RTH are typically the most volatile and offer the most opportunities. The midday session (12-2 PM ET) is often choppy and low-volume, which some traders avoid.
Overnight sessions have their own dynamics and can be profitable, but they require different strategies. Wider stops, smaller positions, and awareness of global news events are essential for overnight trading.
RTH vs. Globex volume
ES trades 1.2 million contracts in a 24-hour period. Approximately 900,000 trade during RTH and 300,000 during the overnight Globex session.
75% of volume is during RTH. The RTH session has 3-4x the depth on the order book, one-tick spreads consistently, and faster fills. This is why most retail traders focus on RTH.
Opening range during RTH
ES opens at 9:30 AM at 5,200. In the first 30 minutes, it trades between 5,195 and 5,212. This 17-point opening range becomes a key reference for the rest of the day.
Many day traders use the opening range as a framework: break above 5,212 signals long, break below 5,195 signals short. This concept only works with RTH data because the overnight range is a different context.
Using RTH strategies during overnight sessions
Overnight sessions have different liquidity, different participants, and different price behavior. Strategies optimized for RTH often fail during Globex.
Not knowing the RTH hours for the product you're trading
ES RTH is 9:30-4:00 ET, but CL is 9:00-2:30 ET and GC is 8:20-1:30 ET. Using the wrong hours means your VWAP, value area, and opening range calculations are wrong.
Trading the midday lull expecting RTH-quality setups
The 12-2 PM ET window for equity futures often has the lowest volume and choppiest price action. Many experienced traders take a break during this period.
